Learn How to Close Your Pool for Winter

In this blog post, we will explore how to properly close your pool for winter so you can kick off your spring opening effortlessly.

1. Clean the Pool Thoroughly

Throughout the swim season,  you’ll need to maintain your pool in pristine condition. However, before winter arrives, you’ll want to carry out a final, thorough cleaning.

Skim off any debris, vacuum the pool floor, and brush the walls. This prevents algae growth and keeps the water clean over the winter months.

2. Balance the Water Chemistry

Test the pool water and adjust the chemicals to balance the pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels. This helps protect the pool surfaces and equipment from corrosion and scale buildup.

Aim for a pH level between 7.2 and 7.6, alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm, and calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm.

3. Shock the Pool

Add a chlorine shock treatment to the pool to kill any remaining bacteria and algae. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct dosage based on your pool size. Allow the chlorine levels to return to normal before proceeding with the next steps.

4. Lower the Water Level

Lower the water level to below the skimmer and return lines to prevent freezing and cracking. If you have a vinyl-lined pool, be careful not to lower the water level too much, as it can cause damage to the liner.

5. Drain Pool Equipment

Drain all the pool equipment, including the pump, filter, heater, and chlorinator. Remove any plugs and store them safely. This prevents water from freezing and damaging the equipment. For cartridge filters, remove and clean the cartridges before storing them.

6. Add Winterizing Chemicals

Add winterizing chemicals to the pool to prevent algae growth and keep the water clear during the winter. These chemicals typically include algaecide, stain and scale preventer, and a winterizing floater. Follow the instructions on the product labels for the correct application.

7. Install a Winter Cover

Cover your pool with a winter cover to keep out debris and protect the water from contamination. Ensure the cover is securely fastened to prevent it from blowing off during strong winds.

For added protection, consider using a pool air pillow under the cover to reduce the pressure of ice formation on the pool walls.

8. Store Pool Accessories

Remove and store all pool accessories, including ladders, diving boards, and pool toys. Clean and dry them before storing them in a dry, cool place to prevent mold and mildew.

9. Inspect and Secure the Pool Area

Finally, inspect the pool area to ensure everything is secure and safe. Make sure the pool cover is tightly fastened and that there are no loose objects that could blow into the pool.

Check that gates and fences are locked to prevent unauthorized access during the off-season.
